Title:
Regina Viarum
About the Photos:
Via Appia Antica, known as “Regina Viarum”, is one of the most important roads built by the Romans and, since 2024, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It crosses Basilicata, intersecting areas affected by the 1950s land reform, during which many plots of land were expropriated from large landowners and redistributed to agricultural workers. The reform was unsuccessful, and now much is now abandoned or in ruins.
Today, only few traces remain of one of the most important roads built by the Romans, — in a kind of “harmony” with the abandonment of the surrounding territory.
